Identifying Lizards

These are the 4 common species of House Lizards or Geckos (or “Cicak”) in Singapore:

  1. Four-Clawed Gecko (Gehyra mutilata)
  2. Asian House Gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus)
  3. Flat-Tailed Gecko (Cosymbotus platyurus)
  4. Spotted House Gecko (Gekko monarchus)

These Geckos typically have greyish tan soft delicate skin, and range from 10 to 25 cm in length. They do not pose a health threat but their presence causes fear. In contrast, outdoors Monitor Lizards (Family Varanidae) may grow to over 2 m in length, and their long muscular tail can injure people and pets, making them dangerous.

How do you know you have an infestation?

You will find:

  1. Adult House Lizards
  2. Black faeces with white urine deposits
  3. Either hard-shelled eggs or live young lizards

What can you do to prevent an infestation?

As House Lizards feed on other pests, the best method of prevention is to keep your home clean and get rid of flying insects, e.g. flies, mosquitoes. Seal gaps under windows and doors, and keep them closed when not in use. To reduce the chances of a Monitor Lizard intruding into your space, keep grass short and remove rocks, logs, and any other potential hiding places.
